Power BI dashboards that people actually open
A dashboard is not useful because it is beautiful. It is useful when a specific person opens it on a specific day and changes a decision because of it. I build reports backwards from that moment.
What the work covers
- Data modelling — the unglamorous layer that decides whether your numbers are trustworthy or merely fast.
- Connecting scattered sources: Dataverse, SharePoint, SQL Server, Excel, and operational systems.
- DAX measures for the calculations your business actually argues about, defined once so everyone uses the same number.
- Row-level security so a branch manager sees their branch and a director sees everything.
- Scheduled refresh and subscriptions, so reports arrive without anyone remembering to run them.

- Monthly reports assembled by hand in Excel over several days.
- Two departments quoting different numbers for the same metric.
- Operational data that exists but nobody has ever seen summarised.
- An existing Power BI report that is slow, or that nobody trusts.
How I approach it
I start from the decisions, not the data. Which questions must this report answer, and who is accountable for acting on the answer? That defines the model. Everything else — visuals, layout, colour — follows from it, and takes far less time than people expect.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Power BI Pro or Premium?
Pro per-user licensing covers most small and mid-size deployments where a defined group of colleagues consumes reports. Premium capacity becomes relevant with large audiences, large datasets or specific refresh and deployment requirements. This is worth deciding before building, because it affects the design.
Can Power BI use data from Power Apps?
Yes, and it is a natural pairing. If your process runs on Dataverse or SharePoint through a Power App, that data is directly reportable — which means the operational system and the reporting layer stay in sync without any export step.
Who maintains the reports afterwards?
That is a decision worth making explicitly. I can hand over a documented model and train someone on your side to extend it, or stay involved for changes. What I try to avoid is delivering something only I can modify.
